A simple guide: What is Business Process Management?

What is Business Process Management?

We can all agree in saying that every business will have its own particular goals, whether that’s hitting $1M in sales by your second year or figuring out how to increase customer retention by 50%. The art of Business Process Management (BPM) is taking the precise steps to achieve those goals. Whatever your company’s ambition, your business processes are the roadmap for getting you there.

Business process management is a discipline, something that’s in a constant state of flux. It can’t be seen as a one time thing you adopt in a crisis but more of an evolutionary practice that you’re always streamlining and optimising.

Business process management = creating and optimising the perfect plans to help you achieve your business goals.

In order to maximise your BPM, you have to be questioning your current state of operations. Is this really the best path to maximise your business’s potential? Perhaps there’s a more efficient way? Since the nature of business is change, as change often means growth, processes can often be forgotten about when tools and systems are updated. Business processes will guide you through change when they’re kept up to date and regularly reviewed and this can be even better managed when done by an external source, who has the ability to take a look at the bigger picture and no preconceived ideas.

Why do you need a BPM?

Processes are “a collection of interrelated work tasks initiated in response to an event that achieves a specific result”. These processes lie at the heart of your business and drive your success. Your business will be held back if not managed or done incorrectly. Essentially, business processes provide the opportunity to save time and company money and if staff aren’t adhering to your processes or doing them badly, this could result in fallen revenue and lost time.

No process is perfect, but the point is to get as close to perfection as possible and implement the tools and knowhow needed to adapt to inevitable change.

Managing and recognising your business processes need not be difficult.
