The Culture Iceberg

Why is the culture iceberg still relevant?

We’ve heard of various versions of the Iceberg theory ad nauseum- but how can we best understand it to actually mobilise culture rather than a pretty graphic?

Culture is like an iceberg. You can only see a very small part of it on top of the surface. The deeper and more meaningful indicators are hidden below in the deep. Hence, the term culture iceberg!

While aspects like workplace feel, dress code, systems, policies, processes, etc. can be visible above the water, the aspects like shared values and beliefs, attitudes towards authority, competition, underlying assumptions, etc. form a deeper look at culture.

This is so important because…

  • You’re missing half of what’s going on in the business
  • You’re not looking at the underlying cause of issues, and you’re just seeing the surface aka the symptoms of problems
  • You’re failing your people
  • You’re not taking advantage of the diverse thinking in your organisation
